Sparkle Days!
About Sparkle Days
One Saturday a month to care for the land together with Lantrip's community. Everyone welcome! Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Please RSVP for each event using the links below.
For this year's Sparkle Days, there will be time for tending in the garden spaces, and time for learning through workshops and demonstrations.
Sparkle Days are come and go as you please! Please dress for time in the garden -- long pants and closed-toed shoes. Event will happen in light rain or shine. If thunderstorm / flooding / safety is a concern, we will reschedule or cancel.

Parking & Meeting
Park in the school parking lot. Entry to the parking lot is on Telephone Rd here. The entrance to the garden is through this gate here.

Sat, Sep 12, 2026 from 8 AM - 12 PM 🌱 Courtyard Native Planting & Workshop on Nature Journaling
Project
September's projects include:
- planting native plants in the courtyard. We have a selection of native plants that tolerate shade and thrive in wet environments to beautify the area by the pond. The plants are from Next Door Nursery and Green Star Wetlands, and are provided to Lantrip through our partnership with Urban Harvest Permaculture.
- planting vines to improve the pre-K dismissal area.
- weeding and seeding the pocket prairie.
Workshop
Nature journaling introduction with a group journaling exercise. There is also a potential berry show and tell :).
If you have a journal or notebook you would like to do your nature journaling in, please bring it! And any other art supplies you would like to use. We will also have some notebooks and art supplies on hand.

Sat, Oct 17, 2026 from 8 AM - 12 PM 🌱 BioBlitz & Workshop on Monarchs and Milkweeds
Project
October's projects include:
- a BioBlitz - "a communal effort to record as many species within a designated location and time period as possible." We'll pair up to take photos of as many different species of plants and their friends in the garden as possible.
- greenhouse clean-up and organizing.
- planting our barbados cherry tree.
We will likely have additional projects related to planting. More details to come.
Workshop
Workshop will be a show and tell about monarchs and milkweed! We'll also talk about citizen science and other efforts like BioBlitz.

Tentatively - working with water
Water is a powerful force of nature and a source of life. In Houston, we have so many bayous and we are right off the Gulf Coast, and at Lantrip, we have a pond and a rain garden. There are so many ways to garden with water in mind, from thinking about what different plants needs to how different roots can be to techniques like rain collection and using ollas. We'll explore how to work with water in the garden.

Tentatively - Making with Mallows (plants of the Malvaceae family)
Mallows grow great in Houston! Different plants of the mallow family can be used for refreshing teas, food, ink, fibers for weaving...even for marshmallows. We'll learn about the possibilities and do some hands-on making.
