Lantrip Blooms!

Rain Garden

Planted in October 2023.

In October of 2023, the rain garden was designed. The natural slope of the land by the drain was used as the location of the rain garden. The area was dug up about 1 foot to create a depression. The soil, rocks and clay from the dig was formed into a berm south of the rain garden. In the area of the berm, the prairie grassland was planted. In the berm itself, students seeded poppies that bloomed brilliantly in the spring of 2024.

10 species of plants were planted in the rain garden itself. 3 species of prairie grasses were planted in the prairie grassland. 3 giant coneflowers were planted in the triangular bed just north of the rain garden.

Each year, the few seed pods from the aquatic milkweed were harvested and planted around the bank of the rain garden.

In spring of 2025, the area of the rain garden was expanded slightly.

In the north slope of the rain garden since the planting, we have seeded a native wildflower mix for spring / summer of 2025, and allowed the fragant mistflower to spread in fall of 2025.

In spring of 2026, there are at least 5 aquatic milkweed in and around the bank of the rain garden. 2 swamp milkweed (1 started from seed by Lantrip, 1 purchased from Buchanan's) were added to the west end of the rain garden by the drain.
